As Simple as Self-Care

When was the last time you felt stressed? Stressed to the extent of not feeling like yourself. Some individuals may experience this more than others; although, everyone is susceptible to this state of being. The American Psychology Association reports that 44% of individuals of the general public say that their level of stress has risen in the past five years. Furthermore, a lack of resolution to this stress can cause distress. This form of stress can cause health issues and even worsen any diseases that are present before the onset of stress.

One activity that can greatly relieve and even prevent stress is the adoption of self-care. For many, this buzzword may initiate thoughts of a skincare routine, wine night, or a weekend-long Netflix binge. Although these activities may work for some, they are largely used by the multi-billion-dollar self-care industry to promote non-essentials. However, it can be much simpler than this.

Try this. Plant your feet firmly on the ground, release anything you may have in your hands, and close your eyes. Then, inhale through the nose, exhale through your nose. Once more, inhale through your nose, exhale through the mouth, and open your eyes whenever you are ready. You have just practiced self-care and have made it very simple. In its core, “self-care is deliberately taking care of your well-being through restorative activities”, says Susannah Winters, a personal development programmer.

Winters further mentions that an individual simply needs to have three things for a good self-care practice. This includes moments of stillness, spending time in nature, and practicing movements regularly. Regularly practicing self-care can greatly reduce stress along with helping to instill resilience to incoming stressors. However, it can be hard to create a routine for self-care. According to GoodTherapy, people with depression, survivors of abuse, dementia, and psychosis are at a greater risk of neglecting self-care. Additionally, people going through a transition in their life, such as going into college, often forget to take care of themselves. However, research shows that students who adopt regular movement, sleep, and healthy diets are less likely to have anxiety, depression, or drop out of college.

Essentially, try to use your own body’s desires to decide what form of self-care you should pursue. Committing to these self-remedies should bring out feelings of self-confidence, self-efficacy, and power. Also, try to impede the negative self-talk by acknowledging it if it ever comes and answering it with deliberate positive self-talk. Lastly, ACE Fitness, mentions that limiting or removing social media and individuals that do not add positivity to your life can help in route to a healthy lifestyle.
